Weasels Larry, Gene along with faithful companions Sammy and Maggie headed for South Dakota with high hopes on Sunday October 24th for our annual pheasant hunt. Little did we realize the challange we would be facing. We experienced probably the worst weather we have faced in 10 years of hunting on our faithful friend and guides John Umikers farm. Monday was cold and windy, Tuesday was cold,Windy and rainy. Then came Wednesday with a blizzard that limited our hunting. Thursday was pleasant and about 40 degrees and enabled us to do some serious hunting. When the dust cleared Thurs. afternoon, we were sitting on our limit of 30 birds, smiling from ear to ear. On Monday morning we had suffered an additional set back when I had a safety malfunction on my Ruger Red Label which resulted in 7 stitches in my right thumb. Despite operating the rest of the trip with a bandaged thumb the size of a hens egg, I was able to handle my gun and shoot fairly well. Birds were very skittish and flushed wildly in the strong wind, but there were plenty of them and we were able to pick off a few that sat tight. As usual the food was good . In addition to a couple of excellent home cooked meals at John's we also sampled a few steaks at Boones in Hoven. As always, the company was good, the hunting was great and the memories will last forever. We're already lookingf forward to next year. Think I better get my safety fixed tho, man that hurts. Next up the annual rut hunt at camp weasel 11/4-11/7. I'll keep you posted.
